Once upon a time a little girl appeared in the streets of one town. She was heading towards a jewellery shop. In the shop window she saw a very beautiful turquoise bead necklace. She liked it so much.
The little girl entered the shop. “Will you, please, show me these turquoise beads?” she asked an old shopkeeper pointing at the necklace she had seen in the shop window.
“These are for my sister. Could you, please, pack them nicely?” the girl continued.
“Ehmm… Well, do you have the money?” the shopkeeper asked his little customer. The girl immediately dropped a handful of coins on the counter. “Is this enough?” she inquired the old man.
When the shopkeeper started to count the few coins, the little thing said, “You know, I want to make a gift for my elder sister. Since our mom died our elder sister has been taking care of us, helping us. And I want so much to give her anything beautiful to see her smile. It’s all I have.” The man gave a long silent look to the child.
He then walked out from his counter, came up to the shop window and took the turquoise beads. He put the necklace into a red gift box and decorated it with a bow.
When the gift was packed, the old man gave it to the little girl with the words, “But carry it carefully.” he stretched the box to the child. The girl’s eyes flashed with happiness.
She grabbed the precious box, ran down the shop stairs and hurried home blissful.
In the evening just before the closing time another guest appeared on the doorstep of the jewellery shop. It was a young lady. She was holding the red gift box the shopkeeper had given to the little girl in the morning.
“Hello, ” said the young lady approaching the counter. “Hello,” the shopkeeper replied. “Were these beads bought from here,” the young lady asked opening the box and showing the necklace to the shopkeeper. “Yes,” conformed the old man. “How much did they cost?” she continued to question him. “Well, in this shop the cost of any item is an agreement between my customer and me,” the man explained to her. “But my sister had just few coins. And this necklace is of genuine turquoise beads. We cannot afford it,” the young lady said with confidence and vigorously moved the box with the necklace to the shopkeeper intending to give it back.
The man’s answer surprised the young lady. He gave the box back to her and said, “Your little sister paid the highest price… Much more that any other adult customer could pay. She gave all she had.” The man put the sign “Closed” on the counter then added, “She wanted to see you smile.” With these words he left .
